Shopify From Scratch – Day 5: Payments, Shipping & Basic Settings

This is the day many beginners feel fear.

Words like:

  • payments

  • shipping

  • taxes

  • settings

Sound technical and risky.

But here’s the truth:

Shopify has already simplified 80% of this for you.
You just need to understand what matters — and what doesn’t.

Today is about making your store functional, not perfect.

What Day 5 Is Really About

By the end of today, your store should be:

  • capable of accepting payments

  • capable of calculating shipping

  • properly configured at a basic level

You are not launching ads today.
You are not handling complex logistics.

This is foundation work.

Step 1: Setting Up Payments (The Safe Way)

In your Shopify dashboard:
Settings → Payments

Shopify will suggest Shopify Payments (if available in your country).

What Beginners Should Do

✔ Enable Shopify Payments (if supported)
✔ Enable PayPal (very important for trust)

That’s enough for now.

You do NOT need:

  • multiple gateways

  • crypto payments

  • buy now pay later

  • complex setups

Why PayPal Is Important for Beginners

PayPal:

  • increases trust

  • helps with first sales

  • allows buyers without cards

Even if you don’t like PayPal,
customers trust it.

Step 2: Understanding Payment Holds (Important)

Beginners panic when they hear:

“Payment hold”

This is normal.

Payment gateways may:

  • hold funds initially

  • review new stores

  • delay first payouts

This is not a problem.
It’s part of fraud prevention.

Don’t change gateways out of fear.

Step 3: Shipping Settings (Keep It Simple)

Go to:
Settings → Shipping and delivery

Beginner Rule:

Simple shipping beats perfect shipping.

Option 1: Free Shipping (Best for Beginners)

Free shipping:

  • reduces hesitation

  • increases conversion

  • simplifies setup

You can:

  • include shipping cost in product price

  • show “Free Shipping” clearly

This is the easiest way to start.

Option 2: Flat Rate Shipping

If free shipping doesn’t work for you:

  • Set one flat rate

  • Keep it transparent

Avoid complex weight-based shipping for now.

Step 4: Taxes (Do Not Panic)

Go to:
Settings → Taxes

For beginners:

  • Enable automatic tax calculation (if available)

  • Do NOT over-optimize

  • Do NOT guess tax rules

If you’re unsure:
✔ Start simple
✔ Consult later when sales happen

No sales = no tax complexity yet.

Step 5: Store Details & Legal Basics

Go to:
Settings → Store details

Fill in:

  • Store name

  • Contact email

  • Business address (home address is fine initially)

This helps with:

  • payment verification

  • trust

  • compliance

Step 6: Policies (Very Important)

Go to:
Settings → Policies

Use Shopify’s templates for:

  • Refund policy

  • Privacy policy

  • Terms of service

  • Shipping policy

Edit lightly.
Don’t copy random internet policies.

These pages:

  • protect you

  • protect customers

  • help with payment gateways

Common Beginner Mistakes on Day 5

❌ Skipping PayPal
❌ Overthinking taxes
❌ Creating complex shipping rules
❌ Ignoring policies
❌ Watching 10 videos and changing settings repeatedly

Simplicity = progress.

What Success Looks Like for Day 5

By the end of today:
✔ Payments enabled
✔ Shipping set (simple)
✔ Basic store info filled
✔ Policies generated

Your store is now functional.

What’s Coming on Day 6

👉 Day 6: Product Pages That Convert (Beginner Copy + Structure)

This is where sales psychology starts.

Final Thought

You don’t need to master payments and shipping.
You just need to set them up correctly once.

Complexity can come later.
Clarity comes first.
